Reporting Options

Reporting human trafficking isn’t easy — it can feel overwhelming, intimidating, or even frightening. We’re here 24/7 to guide you through the process, confidentially and at your pace.

Hotline response advocates are trained to help trafficking survivors submit a report to investigative units — if and when they choose to. If someone is concerned about another person, the hotline can explain reporting options and, where appropriate, help with submitting a report to police. Consent and the safety of those involved are the most important factors when deciding whether to make a report.

Anyone can call to discuss their reporting options.

Yes, you can submit non-urgent tips using our trafficking report form.

We approach every call on a case-by-case basis, prioritizing the safety and consent of everyone involved. Here’s what could happen when you call the hotline to report a possible trafficking situation:

  • If it’s possible, our hotline response advocates will want to speak directly with the person who is experiencing trafficking or who has exited the trafficking situation so we can get their express consent to file a report. Where it’s not possible to
obtain consent from those directly involved, hotline response advocates will conduct a safety and risk assessment to
evaluate next steps and whether reporting serves the best interest of the people in-volved, based on the information
    available.
  • Our hotline response advocates will outline the information we need to submit a police report, any safety concerns that reporting could trigger, any potential challenges and what happens once a report has been submitted
  • They can also review other reporting tools that might be helpful for your situation

Here are some other considerations that can shape the way we respond to your call:

  • The urgency of your situation
  • The needs and wishes of the person being trafficked, if known
  • The level of detail you can share with us
  • The presence of specific signs of trafficking
  • Any relevant provincial or federal laws, and laws around our duty to report

If there’s enough information to take action, we’ll share it with the appropriate law enforcement or government agency. We can also provide you with the contact information for the appropriate law enforcement body in your area if you want to report directly. We don’t receive updates on investigations or the outcome of cases reported to law enforcement. Please note that the Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline is not a law enforcement or investigative agency.

If you have new or additional information about a case you previously reported to the hotline, please get in touch with us again. We may update law enforcement, depending on the nature of the new information.

The hotline can’t support those trying to report human trafficking happening outside of Canada. If you’re looking for services in other countries, we may be able to connect you with other agencies or dedicated human trafficking helplines.
