Other Forms of Trafficking

Labour and sex trafficking may be the most common forms of trafficking in Canada, but traffickers can exploit people in other ways — and people can experience more than one kind of exploitation at the same time.

Forced illegal activities

This type of trafficking exploits people by forcing them to make and sell drugs, smuggle contraband, steal or commit other crimes for the trafficker’s benefit or profit. The trafficker will then use these activities against the person being trafficked so they feel like they can’t reach out for help.

Forced begging

Forced begging happens when a person is made to beg for money and turn it over to their trafficker. They may be assaulted, threatened with violence or emotionally abused if they don’t comply.

Organ trafficking

This type of trafficking exploits people for their organs. They can be forced or manipulated into donating an organ, they may agree to sell an organ but never get paid, or they may have an organ removed without consent during medical treatment.

Forced marriage

Forced marriage happens when someone is made to marry against their will, under pressure, or without giving their full and free consent. It can happen to anyone: people of all ages, cultures, religions and social backgrounds are forced into marriage.
